John Chan

John Chan, a native Edmontonian, began his studies at the age of 6. He is currently studying piano performance and composition at the University of Calgary, where his primary teacher is Professor Marilyn Engle. Mr. Chan has been successful in many local, provincial, and national competitions.
He has won the Rose Bowl grand award at the Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival (2013), first place in the Concours de Musique du Canada for four years, and first place at the National Music Festival in Waterloo (2013). As part of the University’s RBC Concerto Competition, he performed as a soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013.
For two consecutive years (2012-2013), Mr. Chan was selected for the Calgary Pro Musica Society’s Young Artists’ Development Program, which offers students performance opportunities in outreach programs. Mr. Chan has also performed abroad, participating in the Académie Musicale Internationale in Vaison-la-Romaine, France (2010-2012).
In 2013, Mr. Chan joined his teacher, Professor Engle, in her teaching tour of China, and performed in Hong Kong, Xiamen, and Gulangyu Island. In his rare moments of free time, Mr. Chan enjoys reading about Mesoamerican history, and studying architectural designs.
