Micah Yui
Piano
Korean-Canadian pianist Micah Yui moved from Japan to Edmonton, Alberta at the age of eight, where she quickly distinguished herself as a gifted young musician. She made her solo-recital début at ten in Edmonton and soon after appeared as a concerto soloist with the Victoria Symphony. Since then, she has performed across three continents, with broadcasts on CBC, NHK, and WQXR showcasing her artistry to international audiences.
A dedicated pedagogue, Yui has held teaching positions at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, the Peabody Institute, and the Music Institute of Chicago. She currently lives in Los Angeles where she serves on the faculties of the Colburn School—teaching piano and chamber music in both the Community School and the Academy—and Azusa Pacific University, where she works with undergraduate and graduate students. She is also the founder and Artistic Director of the Colburn–Tonebase Piano Seminar, a summer program designed for advanced high-school pianists.
Highly regarded as an adjudicator, Yui has served on the juries of the Esther Honens, Palm Springs International, and Campillos International Piano Competitions, among others. Last summer, she directed The Art of Piano program at the Banff Centre, reinforcing her commitment to supporting the artistic development of young performers.
Her formative training includes studies at the Juilliard School, the Royal Conservatory of Music, the University of Toronto, and the Peabody Conservatory. Her principal teachers were Bella Davidovich and Leon Fleisher, with early guidance from Boris and Inna Zarankin, Marilyn Engle, and Marietta Orlov.
